Tour operators expect a good season after govt lifts travel restrictions

Bangladesh’s inbound tour operators are expecting a good season this winter as foreign leisure tourists have booked trips after two years of travel restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most of these travellers are from Japan, Italy, England, Germany, France, Australia and some other Asian countries, say travel operators.

Bangladesh lifted all types of travel restrictions for foreign tourists – imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic – on 26 September this year, paving the way for tour operators for bookings from foreign tourists for winter trips.

However, tour operators have said that if the declaration of lifting all types of travel restrictions had come a few months ago, they would have received more responses from foreigners.

Though travel costs, including airfare, have increased, the operators said that they did not increase the package cost this year in order to attract guests after a two-year break.

Bengal Tours, one of the leading inbound tour operating agencies in Bangladesh, has already received booking confirmations from more than 600 travellers, who will visit from October 2022 to March 2023.

“Around 65% of the tourists are Japanese, while the rest are from European countries who availed different group tour packages. The cost per day for a tourist under a group package is $75-$85, excluding airfare,” Masud Hossain, managing director of Bengal Tours, told The Business Standard.

“We have decreased our profit margin this year so that guests feel free to come to Bangladesh after a long interval,” he said, adding that Bengal Tours will increase the cost from the 2023-24 season.

Normally, travellers take 7 to 15 day packages.

“Seven British tourists will come in November this year through our agency. Besides, a group of nine Italian citizens will visit in March next year,” Syed Mahbubul Islam Bulu, proprietor of Riverain Tour, told

Diane von Furstenberg’s All-out Excellent Adventure in St. Louis

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS: Diane von Furstenberg took St. Louis by storm, meeting hundreds, hosting a trunk show, advising local fashion designers, dishing in a question-and-answer session and mingling with St. Louis Fashion Fund patrons at a Caleres-sponsored cocktail party. That was all in a day’s work Wednesday for the designer.

Upon touching down Wednesday morning at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, she beelined it to the trunk show, which was being held at the Contemporary Art Museum. Hundreds were on hand, with many seeking styling advice and selfies with the designer. Von Furstenberg helped to ring up $86,000 in trunk show sales there for her collection and $50,000 more had been generated the day before, according to Joan Berkman, who was part of the advance team for von Furstenberg’s visit. Online orders are still being taken.

The designer then met with some local designers and a handful of Washington University fashion students. Afterward, it was off to the university’s Graham Chapel for the aforementioned chat for 800 fans. An additional 1,000 were on the waiting list for the free trunk show. The “Conversation With Diane von Furstenberg” was presented by the Saint Louis Fashion Fund in partnership with the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.

St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones presented the designer with a proclamation declaring Oct. 12 “Diane von Furstenberg Day” in St. Louis.

Susan Sherman, the St. Louis Fashion Fund’s board chair, surprised von Furstenberg with the Saint Louis Fashion Fund Award. The honor had previously been bestowed on Iris Apfel, the late André Leon Talley, Dapper Dan and two Saint Louis natives — Karlie Kloss and Derek Blasberg. Before winging it back to New York, von Furstenberg took in the sights, visiting The Gateway Arch, the St. Louis

How to go live on TikTok? A helpful guide to start your TikTok LIVE today!

TikTok videos are a great way to go viral, but the 15-second videos don’t allow the creators to bond with their audiences due to their short, snappy nature. Going live on TikTok could be an effective way for the creators to interact with their followers online in real time, according to TikTok.

Influencers also have the opportunity to go beyond the short-video format since the TikTok LIVE feature can go up to 60 minutes at once.

Before going live, TikTok warns users to follow its community guidelines and terms of service to promote a “fun, positive, and safe environment” on the social media platform.

New browser extension Ratepunk helps compare hotel room prices

When it comes to booking a hotel online, most people would use a price comparison site or application to hunt for the best price and offers available. But now, there is an even easier way to do this, via a browser extension.

Called Ratepunk, this extension compares hotel room prices across major online travel agencies (OTAs).

“Browser extensions, especially mobile ones, are not widely used yet. But in our assessment, they are the most convenient format to show the lowest hotel rates in seconds,” the company noted in a report by PhocusWire.

All consumers need to do is install the extension for free – there is no need to register or pay. Each time you search for a hotel on the web, Ratepunk pops up to display all the prices from its partner OTAs. At the moment there are nine OTAs listed including Expedia, Agoda, Booking.com and Trip.com, but the company is planning to add five more soon.

“The travel industry is a major duopoly of Booking.com and Expedia, and the lack of concurrence makes the pricing unfair for the customer. By introducing new products to the market, we give more opportunities to the consumer and a push to the major brands,” the company said in the report.

Ratepunk was founded earlier this year in Lithuania by two friends who also founded AirGuru, an interactive travel agency, flight-search and booking engine, nine years ago.

Grooming young stars

Meanwhile, a luxury hotel in Cambodia has pledged to nurture the next generation of hospitality stars by helping to build their skills and offer internship and work opportunities.

The Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh recently signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding with Cambodia’s National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (NIEI). Through this agreement, the hotel will be providing resources, workshops and training sessions,
