Top Outdoor Adventure Activities In Los Cabos

As global tourism grows, Los Cabos—which refers to the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo—has been expanding its market share of Mexico’s nearly 40 million annual visitors with the main international market the United States.

The country of Mexico in general has always been a popular destination for Americans due to its close proximity and diverse tourism options, but one of the things that make Los Cabos stand out is its focus on active-adventure tourism. And once travelers explore the region, they are likely to come back. In fact, according to the tourism board, 30% of visitors in July 2022 had previously visited Los Cabos.

“Travelers have been getting outdoors over the past two years more and more and they are interested in taking vacations that allow them to enjoy the outdoors in a more distanced and comfortable atmosphere,” says Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board. “Our visitors to Los Cabos are also environmentally conscious. They keep this in mind when booking to ensure their activities are environmentally safe and give back to the destination.”

Los Cabos—where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean—is known for its unique combination of mountain, desert and ocean landscapes—highlighted by its famed landmark, the iconic Arch at Land’s End.

Located at the end of Baja California Sur, about 1,000 miles south of San Diego, California, Los Cabos is a subtropical desert with temps warm throughout the year.

Here are some of the top outdoor adventure activities in Los Cabos.

Sailing

Since Los Cabos is surrounded by water, a sailing tour is a good way to get a sense of the area and it’s also a chance to see marine life including dolphins, rays and whales. Plus, you’ll be able to cruise past famous landmarks like Land’s End Arch, Lover’s Beach and one of the many bustling sea lion colonies.

Horseback Riding

Horseback Riding is another popular way to explore the region. It’s a great way to really see how diverse Cabo’s landscape is—changing from deserts filled with cactus and rocks, to sand beaches and the ocean.

Water Sports

Surfing, snorkeling and SUP are top water sports for families and couples. Surfing has been especially popular and both group and private lessons at Costa Azul beach have the same goal: to get you riding the waves in a safe and fun manner. Group tours are more budget-friendly and private tours are ideal for those who want extra attention.

ATV Tours

ATV Tour through the Los Cabos desert in an all-terrain vehicle is a unique way to explore the region. There are plenty of trails and landscapes including streams, beachfront, and a suspension bridge. This eco-friendly experience has verified roads and trails.
