London hotels are already ramping up prices by up to two-thirds ahead of King Charles III’s Coronation in May, it’s been claimed.

Trivago chief executive Axel Hefer says the group has seen hotel prices in the capital jump by more than 60% year on year for the landmark day on on Saturday, May 6.

Accomodation prices have already hit an average of £254 for people who are looking to book on the day compared with £154 per night for the same date last year.

Interest is huge as it’s the first ceremony of its kind since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in June 1953.

As hotels increase their prices to capitalise, Trivago says many visitors may plan to avoid London during the event, explaining ‘given the very high prices, people would rather avoid traveling to the UK capital on the day of the coronation.’

Booking data shows search is actually down for London on the day, compared to the weekends before and after.

Searches for London are also down 8% compared with the same day last year.

Mr Hefer said that, while coronation day is an extreme example in terms of prices this year, the accommodation site is seeing hotel prices continue to rise generally across the board.

He said hotel prices are rising by low single digits to high single digits this year, on top of increased prices in 2022.

Travellers are combatting the higher prices by switching to cheaper destinations, such as Istanbul, Morocco and Portugal, as well as domestic staycationing, while also beginning to

King Charles visited a kebab shop while meeting people collecting aid for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey.

His Majesty spent the day chatting with one of London’s Turkish communities, telling them how ‘deeply sorry’ he was about the natural disaster in their homeland.

As part of the trip, he popped into the Mangal Kebab Restaurant, in Hounslow, west London.

He was filmed shaking hands with the chefs and joking about whether they had any special ingredients to attract diners.

The 74-year-old monarch spoke with people collecting blankets, food, and warm clothing for those affected by last week’s earthquake.

He was joined by the Turkish Ambassador to the UK, Umit Yalcin, and then the pair were given a tour of the operation by a volunteer.

At one point, the King was served a Turkish cup of tea – made with the plant Camellia sinensis and traditionally served in a tulip-shaped glass.

King Charles III meets members of the Turkish diaspora community who have been collecting, packaging and organising the transportation of food, blankets and warm clothing for people who have recently been affected by the earthquakes in Turkey, during a visit to the West London Turkish Volunteers in Hounslow.

After vesting the kebab shop, the King went to see pop-up support centre for Syrians living in the capital in Trafalgar Square, where he was visibly emotional.

He told a volunteer: ‘I can’t imagine how hard it has been for you. It’s terrible.’

The earthquake’s death toll reached a staggering 35,000 yesterday – making it Turkey’s worst disaster for a century.

Meanwhile, a total of 5,714 people have died in Syria, including both government and rebel-held areas, taking the total number of confirmed deaths to 41,132.

  • But data shows travellers may be shunning London on the day of the coronation

London’s hotels have ramped up their prices by nearly two thirds for the King’s coronation, an accommodation search website has revealed.

Trivago chief executive Axel Hefer said the group has seen hotel prices in the capital jump by 60 per cent year on year for King Charles’s coronation day on May 6.

Accommodation search website Trivago has revealed that London hotels have ramped up their prices by nearly two-thirds for the King’s coronation.

Prices will hit £254 a night for early bookers, compared with £154 a night for the same day last year.

But as hotels look to increase prices to capitalise on the expected surge in visitors for King Charles’s coronation, Trivago said booking trends suggest many visitors may be shunning London on the day of the ceremony.
