Best Credit Cards for Authorized Users in 2022

Select’s editorial team works independently to review financial products and write articles we think our readers will find useful. We earn a commission from affiliate partners on many offers, but not all offers on Select are from affiliate partners.

When you’re approved for a credit card, you have the option to add other people to your account. This allows them to piggyback off your credit and share many of your cardholder benefits, such as airport lounge access.

Along with the benefits, you will earn rewards for any purchases an authorized user makes. However, as the primary account holder, it’s your responsibility to pay the bill each month, so be sure to give an authorized user card to someone who can be trusted.

So if you’re interested in adding someone to your credit card as an authorized user, here are some of the best credit cards to do that.

FAQs

Best overall

The Platinum Card® from American Express

On the American Express secure site

  • Rewards

Earn 5X Membership Rewards® Points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year, 5X Membership Rewards® Points on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel, 1X points on all other eligible purchases

  • Welcome bonus

Earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® points after spending $6,000 within 6 months of card membership. Apply and select your preferred metal Card design: classic Platinum Card®, Platinum x Kehinde Wiley, or Platinum x Julie Mehretu.

  • Annual fee

  • Intro APR

  • Regular APR

  • Balance transfer fee

  • Foreign transaction fee

  • Credit Needed

Benefits: The Platinum Card® from American Express offers primary cardholders a long list of perks, including Uber credits, airline fee credits, Saks Fifth Avenue shopping credits, TSA PreCheck/Global Entry application fee credits, digital entertainment credits, robust airport lounge access, automatic hotel and car rental elite status and much more. Terms apply.

Authorized users get many of the same benefits, except for the various shopping and travel credits:

  • Worldwide airport lounge access, including Delta SkyClubs and Amex Centurion Lounges
  • Up to $100 fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
  • Automatic hotel elite status with Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy
  • Automatic car rental elite status with Hertz Gold Plus Rewards, Avis Preferred and National Car Rental Emerald Club Executive
  • Elite-like perks on hotel stays booked through Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection
  • Comprehensive travel insurance
  • Complimentary Amex concierge service

And as you and your authorized users spend on the card, you’ll earn:

  • 5X Membership Rewards® Points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year
  • 5X Membership Rewards® Points on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel
  • 1X points on all other eligible purchases

Authorized user fee: $175 total per year for up to three users (see rates and fees). This breaks down to less than $60 per authorized user per year when fully maximized. So if you have a few friends that will be traveling a bit, you may consider adding them to give them lounge access and travel protections as well.

If you’re adding someone who only wants to earn rewards on their purchases and doesn’t need the additional benefits, you can add them for free and they will get an Amex Gold Card. However, this isn’t the same American Express® Gold Card mentioned below. This free version has the same earning rates as the Platinum Card but doesn’t include any of its other benefits. This card is solely to keep your authorized users on your same account and earn more Membership Rewards points.
